He keeps the aunts from coddling her too much, and makes sure that she has plenty of time to play outside with her cousins. Day by day, learning how to care for each of these people, Rose begins to bloom. Orphaned at 13, Rose goes to live with her Uncle Alec.

Eight Cousins; Or, The Aunt-Hill by Louisa May Alcott

Here she meets her seven spirited boy cousins with whom she has home-spun fun, many exciting adventures and in the process learns valuable lessons about life, love and friendship. It is the story of Rose Campbell, a lonely and sickly girl who has been recently orphaned and must now reside with her maiden aunts, the matriarchs of her wealthy Boston family. When Rose's guardian, Uncle Alec, returns from abroad, he takes over her care. Returning to the "Aunt Hill" from a two-year trip around the world, year-old Rose Campbell suddenly finds herself surrounded by male admirers, all expecting her to marry them!

Eight Cousins

Rose is rich and pretty, and she suspects many of these suitors are more interested in her wealth than her dreams. But she is determined to live her own life and find her own love, despite the many plans of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Louisa May Alcott wrote this delightful sequel to Eight Cousins at the request of her many fans. This is the charming, human account of the adventures of lovely, wealthy Rose Campbell as she grows into young womanhood.

Eight Cousins: or The Aunt Hill

Rose's greatest attraction undoubtedly is that she's such a real girl. She has her trials and disappointments, her temptations and failures. She is heiress to his considerable fortune. The Campbells, wealthy residents of Boston, are of Scottish descent, and some of them are engaged in the China trade. She has never known her mother and has lived apart from the rest of the Campbell family all her life.

Eight Cousins: Or, Aunt-Hill

As the story opens, she is mourning the death of her father and awaiting with apprehension the arrival of her unknown guardian, Alec Campbell. She speaks French fairly well, and is slightly vain as becomes apparent when her uncle wishes her to refrain from the wearing of tight belts around her waist. The Alcotts themselves would summer in a location called "Happy Corner" in Walpole, New Hampshire , but the description of "Cosey Corner" places it within walking distance of Mount Washington , very likely in Intervale.
